Bikes: An ecological disaster!
May 05, 2005, 12:37
Ecologically unsound if you ask me.

First, mine some iron ore. (or magnesium if you're posh) Heat it up to about 1500 degrees C with coal to produce steel. Then get some big pressy things and turn it into tubes, which are then welded together to form a frame and wheels and stuff. then, get some rubber from a tree in indonesia. Ship it half way around the world and vulcanise it. Or vulcanise it then ship it half way around the world. Turn it into tyres, and put it on the frame you made.

Next. Add lots of plastic bits, like seat, handgrips, gearlevers, etc. Lubricate all the moving bits with... oil. Then wrap the whole thing in a big plastic bag, and put it in a cardboard box covered in gaudy ink.

But here's the real killer...

Build 10,000 miles of tamac cycle paths for the bike to travel on, or use the bike to cause erosion in the countryside. Also, since travelling by bicycle requires the input of human energy, build a modern hyper-industrial agricultural industry to provide the cyclist with the calories he needs to move the damn thing around.

2 wheels bad, no wheels good! What we need is not more bikes, but more legs, and shoes.

Hmmm. Take a cow in Guatemala. Kill it and remove its skin...
