Beanfield 20 year Anniversary!
Jul 05, 2004, 12:42
Taken from 'Groundswell News' issues 25 Summer 2004: http://www.groundswell.org.uk/

Were you at the Beanfield on 1st June 1985? Next year will be the 20th Anniversary of the bloody suppression of the 11th Peoples' Free Festival. As one of the largest mass arrests in history, the Beanfield was one of the first in a series of incidents in which Travellers and festival-goers suffered brutal police tactics: the destruction of homes and needless violence towards innocent men, women and children. A chosen way of life was increasingly being criinalised with the full support of the establishment. Set in time, the Beanfield incident is a mark on many different people's histories. It has had far-reaching implications for the rights of Travellers, as well as for public access for worship at sacred sites such as Stonehenge.

Refusing to let the dust settle, the Beanfield Campaign has been set up to raise awareness of the experiences of the people who were there (as well as their families and friends) and to establish a network for a range of possible arts, education and media projects.

To share your memories or get more involved please contact Jo - 07961 571170 or email beanfieldcampaign at hotmail dot com (add the @ and the . as per normal). Thank you.
