Wole Soyinka
Apr 08, 2004, 02:31
My batterd old car has no aerial. For some reason, the only station it will pick up with anything like clarity is Radio 4. Fine by me, although I find some of it a bit boring sometimes. I'm so glad the usual family fare of chart and adverts is reduced to an intermittent crackle.

Anyway, there's an annual series of lectures called the Reith lectures, named after the BBCs first director general.

This years lecturer is a Nigerian guy called Wole Soyinka, and he's been talking about the Climate of fear.

For half an hour each evening, he's explaining that 9-11 didn't change the world - it's just a continuation of the state's/pseudostate's inhumanity to man. He spent several years in solitary confinement for daring to use art to defy the state, and a lot of what he has to say is with reference to what Fear does to creativity. Creativity being at the very heart of what makes us human.

You'll find all the links via this link...

I think it's on all week. Hope you get to catch some of it.
