I have a semantic/etymologic question...

Is "pagan" not a term created by organised religion (Christianity in particular) to define that which is other than itself, the unconverted, the heathen? That's how I understand it, and is maybe why there are so many things that can be classified as "pagan." It's a bit like the word "foreign," it doesn't narrow things down much. I don't mean to suggest that words can't evolve, or that I don't understand stealing words from your oppressor to dilute their power. Interestingly, I believe that both "heathen" and "pagan" originally meant rural or of the countryside, and came to their new meanings because they were the last people to convert...
