Actually that's not entirely true. Being born in the UK, I've studied capitalism since birth ;-)
Enjoyed brief spells of communal living and working in 6 yrs an environment that was half self-sufficient and half private business (an ex-Steiner school) which opened my eyes to many possibilities. Other than that have read Thoreau, Emerson, Rupert The Bear, Thomas Hardy, Ray Bradbury, Bob Black (a flag goes up!), Stephen King, M R James, Algernon Blackwood, Aleister Crowley, Ghandi biog, H H Munro, Noam Chomsky, George Monbiot, Ayn Rand, Lorna Doone, Malleus Maleficarum, the Bible, The Green Consumer Guide, Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Kerrang and The Spun (Reclaim the Streets peeps). Amongst thousands of others which I gave away a few months ago.
