I wouldn't dismiss the death of any child and I'm sure aqk isn't doing any such thing. What does get to me is the elevation of the loss of one particular child to iconic status.

As was said at the time of the Soham girls going missing (an is covered in the above website), the whole of the media went into overdrive at the loss of two white, middle class girls. What about the hundreds of other children who go missing each year, many of them working class and/or non-white, who also end up dead? For example, the African boy whose torso was found in the Thames has suddenly become interesting to the media because there are ritual killing overtones. How about the fact that he's a kid who went missing and ended up dead? He's a black kid of unknown background. Is his life more or less important than Milly or the girls from Soham?

Milly's death is a tragic loss, but not more so than that of other kids who go missing. Don't glorify her death with schmaltz.
