The Nine Stones Altarnun
Jul 09, 2017, 08:55
Thought you may like to see a video of the stones just a mile away from where I live. Being a 'monitor' for Historic England's HAR officer in my area I shot the film for her as there is talk about infilling the 'ponds'.
Personally, purely from a 'looks nice as it is' angle, I like it like this, but of course it can't be ignored having already been re-erected in the 30's I believe.

It is the most beautiful and quiet spot which in early evening is visited by hordes of ponies coming down to drink from the natural waterholes just to the south of the circle and is a wonderful sight. Of course many also ignore them and head straight for the circles ponds instead, which of course just exacerbates the problem.

Yes, it is beautiful as I saw from a recent midsummer's eve photo posted by thesweetcheat.

Whether he will want to come back and discuss it with you (for reasons I won't refer to here) remains to be seen.

So why mention it? What happens on another thread on a separate forum and for a totally different matter has nothing to do with this thread June and not to be brought over here. I have mentioned before that I have nothing but respect for Alkin when it comes to a subject he knows well i.e. archaeology, where all of his reports are excellent and make for a good read.

He is as welcome as anyone to comment on the site and video and discuss as this is a common interest we share.

It's a great site. I've wanted to go for years, since the paper TMA and the black and white photo in little Burl.

I pretty much followed the same route as Sanctuary with a diversion to Clitters cairn. My only issue with the circle itself is the central stone that doesn't look right to me. I think the pools around the stones are quite nice although there is always the worry of the stones becoming unstable.

Because it was so dry I went to Goodaver more directly than I originally planned from here, but followed your advice regarding using the forestry tracks. By the way the "private" section has now been mostly felled.

But half a day ago you said to him:

You have highlighted 'Dark Earth' by the way. The protection of the landscape has always been my primary concern on TMA, and my 'Pollyanna' nature always highlights the positive ;) though to be truthful should have started a separate thread....

Is it the shape of the central stone or position of it, or something else that bothers you tsc? The pools, that vary in size, tend to give a somewhat off-balance appearance I feel. I did a fly-over with my drone and shot an aerial video of the circle. Rather windy on the day and Donald (my drones name!!) got knocked about a bit, but not a bad vid.

https://youtu.be/HisIjoSCu3I

Here is a vid of the cairn...
https://youtu.be/n9kJuVIwkkc

And one of Goodaver circle. I was only there two weeks ago and noticed the felling that had taken place. It was a really creepy place beforehand with so many dead and dying trees.
Toward the end of the vid you will come to the snakes head stone as I've labelled it. I mentioned the snakes in my field-notes that I'd been warned about and had a close look at it this time. As I walk around it I zero in on the 'head' of the snake to highlight what appears to be fault lines underneath it giving the appearance that it has been cut to shape and fitted on top of the base stone. I'm sort of torn between natural or otherwise!

https://youtu.be/chDxPMV24tA

The reason I was out there again was to see how bad it was with regard to reed and vegetation growth and if bad would my little team like to deal with it. No brainer when you see it!!
We'll do it but only providing we can drive in from the road to the south across the landowners fields and use blade cutters and strimmers. Takes forever having to always use garden shears and secateurs to keep NE happy!

Quite obvious now to everyone that you are shit-stirring and have no interest in this thread whatsoever. Do us all a favour and creep back onto your little hole and stay there.
