There is a recent EH precedent in the form of Hetty Pegler's Tump. They closed the chambers due to fears of collapse/public safety and turfed the entrance in, then carried out structural work and reopened the chambers.

Trethevy would be in theory a very 'easy' monument to take apart and put back in the right order (assuming my assumptions are correct as to how the stones were originally positioned that is) because there are so few of them (eight in total including the capstone) to deal with. Every one of them however would flatten you if they tipped over so it would need heavy lifting gear. All but the front closure stone are resting on the surface/bedrock hence the reason for the bank to be maintained for stability.
How much of the Tump did they repair do you know Alken, was it extensive?

I don't really know Roy (I haven't even been back since it reopened). The EH website indicates that there had been several Victorian/Edwardian reconstructions as well though:

I give "em" enough stick so have to give credit where it's due here, spiffing work.
On the other hand, shouldn't Trethevy be fenced off before it kills someone ? It looks like it easily could and that would be my immediate priority.
