Well I think I'm right that both the law and EH are more pro-development these days (they've even changed the definition of conservation to mean managing change). EH is the (unwilling) creature of the Govt. after all, not an independent champion for heritage, and the govt.'s will is to downgrade heritage.

On the other hand, I'm glad they haven't had to become "progressive" over the Avebury issue. They oughta be fuddy duddy and take decades to mull over any changes. And don't forget, unlike the stick 'em all up now party or even "The People" they're tied in to international charters, documents that say things like "A monument is inseparable from the history to which it bears witness" which can be interpreted several ways with no Case Law to guide them, and "restoration must stop at the point where conjecture begins".

I'm just wondering Nigel if the honour of claiming second spot in the world ranking might just get thim thinking...'Now what can we do to make it number one'? It would be quite a natural thing to do, well it would be in most other walks of life!

As UNESCO has a rigid definition of authenticity thankfully, it won't involve faking prehistory.
Sorry Roy, we just have to beg to differ.

I'm confused VBB why would putting the original stones back up where they came from be "faking prehistory"? :)

I just told her in the flesh but it feels right i should write it here as well - VBB probably means that because the original stoneholes have mainly been destroyed by the digging of the burial pits, therefore it would be next to impossible to guarantee the stones are in the original places [your talking about cm's though].

It may only be cm's to you, but it has given me a great deal of pleasure and relief, and I've had no complaints!

Hang on a minute "told her in the flesh", I've been accused of many things (sadly) but never of being of the opposite doo-dah! Well not since I was a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys!
