Yesterday someone on FB posted all the links to Julian Cope's journey through the British Isles - good to be reminded how 'trail-blazing' it was. I learnt for example that Callanish was almost buried in peat until 1857 - by which time antiquarianism had become 'fashionable'. JC made the point that the peat had protected the stones from damage during the fundamental Christian era as no-one thought it an important site.
While some of the stones at Avebury remain buried they are protected (different reasons) for future generations to enjoy - I'm certain they will be raised one day.
