You've got to start somewhere and Bettany Hughes started with Gaea (Gaia) who was the grandmother of Zeus. It seems male gods came to prominence when people started going to war.


Absolutely. The change to agrarian culture and cities saw a shift from the Goddess to the dominant and agressive concept of a male god. I can highly recommend this book re. the rise of the masculine concept of divinity and its ramifications. You can get a good secon hand copy for pennies:
