Thanks guys, I've not read the Grinsell ones as far as I can recall anyway. Am finishing Earthern Longbarrows for a second time thanks VBB and LB of the cotswolds is on my shelves thanks TSC but I think I only made it half way through last time (bought with 3 or 4 others so not given a good read).

Have just reread the chronology assesment in Barnetts 1996 opus of Peak barrows and it looks like the excavations aren't really detailed enough to be sure. Some of the big round chambered tombs have smaller long/ovoid mounds under them and there is no evidence that the earthern barrows weren't chambered. More thinking required...
