New wind farm proposed for Cholsey Hill
Jan 27, 2012, 21:36
I'm not sure if any of you will have seen this but where I live, South Oxfordshire, there has been funding given to see how feasible it would be to build a Wind Farm on top of Cholsey Hill (just 2 miles from Wallingford) which is said to be part of an old Iron Age Hill Fort.

Nothing can be seen of the hill fort any more so I wanted to know if anyone had any more evidence of this fort existing? I'd be interested to know.

Many thanks

Here's the Pastscape page, which indicates the fort has been destroyed (which doesn't mean there won't be buried archaeological features below plough level):

Strange that there are no dissenting voices from the area. Science writer(whatever qualification that is), local residents and "Sustainable Wallingford" all appear to be in favour of this....
I'm still not wholly convinced by the efficiency of these....there are more turbines in the UK than pylons....some turn with a carefree attitude on the calmest of days others don't appear to be affected by the wind despite the constant whirling of their closest turbines. Has anyone yet said how much "sustainable energy" the country as a whole is using....and is this percentage actually worth the blot (blots even) on the landscape. Didn't they have to shut down several hundred turbines during the recent gales...was this really to prevent damage or were the powers that be just making sure the hoi-polloi didn't have too much "sustainable" power and had to resort to the traditional costly versions???/

Thanks for your response. I have mixed feeling about this too which is why I thought I'd check about the proof of an actual Iron Age Hill fort existing on this hill. It's a very low lying hill at that but I feel that this place isn't the right area for a wind farm such as the one being proposed.

Thank you for this. I should have thought to have looked here first. Appreciated.
