Certainly agree with you and scubi about re-erecting any fallen/buried stones (though that’s sadly not going to happen for the time being). The markers (which also include the larger one for the Obelisk) are a bit more problematic. Markers have to be that – pointers showing were something was but remaining as unobtrusive as possible. It gets a bit complicated here though, because of the markers connection with Keiller. Along with the now demolished 1930s Art Deco Bonds’ Garage (formerly Rawlins' Garage), the markers are also Art Deco. You could say they’re all part of the ‘Keiller Heritage’ and in a way a tribute to Keiller and his work (not perfect but more that anyone else has done to ‘restore’ Avebury). Agreed that markers made of concrete is unfortunate (perhaps the same thing in dressed sarsen would be better).
As for the Bonds’ Garage, I always thought it had a certain charm about it, and if you looked carefully you could see the 'Egyptian' Art Deco elements on its façade. Some thought it was scruffy and dilapidated, but if it was it was because it had been allowed to become that way. It was a sad loss when it was demolished and replaced with five new houses that no-one will miss when their time comes for the chop. The garage though was something else - another bit of Avebury’s heritage lost through wretched ignorance... (can feel a Stukeley moment coming on...).
