I agree, I too get tired of the 'ritual' statement and it is often used where no other reasonable explanation can be given, however, there are a few oddities here though.
For instance, why build the surrounding greater and lesser walls differently or why place a hearth in a door way and why have multiple entry points to allow the cold Orkney wind to blow through like a wind tunnel when a single entry would reduce this (or is the hearth in the door way some sort of forced air heating system) to name a few. To me these features do not seem sensible for either domestic or defensive purposes.
Some of these same features can be seen at the Barnhouse 'settlement' up the road and if and when they can investigate the ness further I am sure it will raise more answers and questions.
But one things for certain....it all really interesting stuff.
