That's a really good post HD and yes things are different in the south for all sorts of reasons, hunting and shooting not being the least in the wealthier counties such as Wiltshire and Gloucestshire. I'll always support the Ramblers Association because (apart from organising walks) they campaign to keep ancient rights of way open. This is no mean feat with farmers ploughing them up all the time - most of these country footpaths are genuinely historic and do give access to the countryside which would otherwise be closed.
As for the rock art stone in question, it would probably be a good idea to keep its location out of the public eye as, depending on its size, it may be portable.
I came across this local stone earlier in the year and wondered about it. Its in an little village not too far from the M4 in Wiltshire and has obviously been moved from another location. Its sarsen, seems to have been worked in regard to its shape though I've been told the 'cup marks' are natural. I wouldn't attempt to publicise it any further other than saying I've seen it and its lovely.
