Easter Island

Thought folks might like to know about a debate that's been going on on the blog of Author, Mark Lynas.

Lynas published a piece of research by Archaeologists, Carl Lipo and Terry Hunt. This research was highly critical of the work of author, Jared Diamond, who wrote a long chapter about the Island in his book, "Collapse"

Diamond took the time to respond to this piece, and Mark Lynas published his response in full.

Lipo and Hunt have now issued their own rebuttal.

The debate hangs upon the method used to transport the statues from the quarry to their final settings. Diamond reckoned the use of logs as rollers contributed to the deforestation of the island. Lipo and Hunt claim the statues were "walked" in the same way you'd move a fridge or wardrobe across a room.

Diamond has yet to respond.
