It looks like the the new info and dates from the 2008 excavation show the earlier Tratman interpretation regarding the contruction sequence to be wrong and three new RC dates from charcoal in the ditch give dates (one was 2920-2870 -cal BC ) suggesting Late Neolithic hence putting the monument into the formative henge category .

Do you know how that compares to Stanton Drew? I can't seem to find a date easily from work.

I'm guessing its considerably earlier than the two smaller "classic" henges on the Mendip plateau (Gorsey bigbury and er the other one (Hunter's lodge?))

Sorry I don't know of any date for Stanton Drew , are there any ? .Gorsey Bigbury is more of a "classic " date 2400-2060 BC .

Not sure tbh. I think they worked out the sequence for the main circle/henge inc the wooden circles when all the geofizz was done. Maybe all the dates were comparative...

Jamie, the Jodie Lewis book says, lack of direct dating at Stanton Drew, but it would seem like that the complex at S/D is multi-phase (obviously), the earliest phase either being the construction of the timber circle complex or the henge...

Gorsey Bigbury is just as difficult, from what I can read, there is a 'before Beaker' and after, (records were lost in WW2) but she goes on to say that the initial phase of the site comprised the erection of a henge monument (class 1) prior to 2250 cal BC Tiompan.
I don't understand the new dating method of calibrated dates.

You'd have to read the book to understand Hunter's Lodge! falls between late Neolithic henge and early bronze age disc barrow because it has an offset mound inside and other features....

Moss the only dates I have seen for Gorsey are 2400 -2130 and 2470 -2030 the latter having a 95% chance of accuracy .
As 2250 cal BC falls in the middle I don't know if that means that Jodie Lewis has some more rencet and accurate dates or if she is taking the middle route . Dating is becoming more precsie but there is still a wee but weven the new Bayliss dates with the addition of Bayesian stats leave some room for uncertainty .

I almost did, but then presumed EH would be responsible for bringing a prosecution so were (hopefully) in communication with the police.

June has posted a link to an online petition that relates to Priddy but I thought I'd flag it up on the forum as well. The petition can be found at -

If you ask me they do however need to take this culprit's arse to court and make a show of him as much as possible. The site was protected by law after all.

Yup, and maybe use Mr Johnson as an example... ;-)
