Well the horse has bolted Rhiannon, and this part of the Mendips seems to be prime ****** fox hunting country, why for instance did they want to build new hunt kennels in the area for a 'sport' that has been outlawed. Lets hope EH goes ahead and takes them to task publicly.

It's an interesting point. Not having any scheduled monuments in our back garden, I don't have a clue what information such lucky people are given, or how often they're reminded about their responsibility. One Wonders. I mean it's one thing if it's just some random round barrow. But the Priddy henges were hardly ten-a-penny. That's what makes it so flipping aggravating.

If, as Megalithic writes, there was a problem at Priddy as far back as 2008, and EH didn’t act on it, they should now be held responsible on both accounts. Care to comment English Heritage?

I doubt they are at liberty to say anything at this stage in view of possible legal moves. To be fair to them the only "warning" seems to have been someone saying the local hunt taking over the nearby farm constituted a risk. While I personally think hunt supporters are not who I'd want my daughter to marry I don't think EH could put the henges on an at risk list for that reason. ;) So far as we know this was an unpredictable event and they can't be blamed. Not like seeing people misbehave at solstice year after year and doing nothing about it! More to the point, I wonder if this land was under a DEFRA stewardship scheme? Most farms are nowadays. I wouldn't like to think I was paying someone so much a hectare to look after the archaeology here.... NB I haven't suggested who might be responsible for the damage, not wanting to be sued. It could be a case of a mistake committed by a contractor. Who knows?

I find that very unlikely in this case, though it could be of course. I just think the story will be less simple than that when the truth is out. No less reprehensible, just less black and white.

It could be a case of a mistake committed by a contractor. Who knows? Aye, could be, all the more reason for English Heritage to clarify things – they are, after all, working for us not themselves ;-) Put another way, those concerned with the conservation (and better understanding of ancient sites) are us lot here and on similar boards (as well as a sprinkling of archaeos working within that timeframe). Put another way, if someone had bulldozed the only one of its kind listed building there’d be a hue and outcry in the media, and those under whose stewardship said building resided would be called to account – pronto.

I don't really see how EH or anyone else can keep an eye on everywhere at once. once someone's been made aware of what they've got what more can you do, you can't be checking on them every five minutes? Don't they have to presume that people whose land these things are on aren't completely ignorant and thick? If you ask me they do however need to take this culprit's arse to court and make a show of him as much as possible. The site was protected by law after all.

True, and as we don’t yet know the details it really is important that EH explain what’s gone wrong asap – especially in light of Megalithic’s comment above that something may have been going wrong there four years ago.
