He was a banker and worked with his family's company, but was also involved with entomology, botany, biology, archaeology, and ethnography. He helped establish archaeology as a scientific discipline, and was also influential with nineteenth-century debates concerning evolutionary theory." They don’t make bankers like that anymore ;-) They certainly don't LS more's the pity!! His books which we all vast Works go for peanuts on Fleabay.

Nigel Kerton writing in the The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald today reports that - "People who live in Avebury or who visit the village and would like to have a say about the way the village famous for its stone circles and Silbury Hill is managed, will be given an opportunity when the World Heritage Site Management Plan is updated. World Heritage Site officer Sarah Simmons said it was vitally important that those with an interest in the village were involved in revising the last management plan created in 2005. "There will be two opportunities for the public to put forward their ideas and suggestions, at the Avebury Social centre next Tuesday. Ms Simmonds will be available to answer questions and listen to ideas at drop in sessions in the Social Centre on Avebury High Street next Tuesday between 2 -7 pm and in Marlborough Library on Monday, August 13, between 2 -7pm." More here.

I would very much like to see enforced speed limits along the section of the A4 that goes through the WHS. Getting across the road from the Ridgeway (Overton Hill) to East Kennett and the Sanctuary is very dangerous as there is a hump in the road so you can't be seen until potentially too late. Same applies to the crossing point from the Winterbourne path to the walk up to WK Long Barrow - vehicles including heavy lorries go waaay to fast. PS: Traffic management through the village - not sure how best, perhaps a 20mph speed limit. "Slow Down" signs on the Beckhampton Road where people cross from the NT car park to walk over to Silbury.

Wouldn't it be good if the various (and sadly often warring) Stonehead websites could (if not actually work together on this one) at least put together a statement representing their particular points of view. That’s not to say that individuals shouldn’t do the same, but something from the likes of Heritage Action, The Megalithic Portal, TMA etc might carry a bit more weight. Then again it might not. Just an idea...

More here. Hmmm, I may take them up on this. Never mind the NT car parking fee, the dangerous roads or people climbing that hillock, that stone up near the raspberry jam needs to be repositioned a bit closer to the henge. It's a hell of a walk when I want to polish up my B&Q axe.

Outside the Red Lion at lunchtime on a warm day last September
