Should anybody else be in the vicinity, willing to show me a round, I'll gladly say hello and might even buy you a hairy dog.

Not definite yet but i may well be there, if i am i'd be happy to show you around.
Are you staying the night there. ?

Nah, 'fraid not. Well, not planning to, at the moment, anyway. I'd have been stopping over at a hotel in Croydon, the night before.

I haven't checked just how far Avebury is from Croydon, but I'd imagine I should be there for late morning-ish.

Sadly we're going in the opposite direction to do Offa's Dyke part 3 that weekend.

Was in Calamity Country 10 days ago - went up Titterstone Clee for the first time for about 20 years. Great spot. And Kington/Radnor yesterday (okay, a bit out of your immediate vicinity).

If work doesn't get in the way I should be able to get over there. I am certainly no expert but would be happy to go along with you.

Scubi, judging by your photographs of Devil's Den I would say you are well qualified to show someone around the Avebury WHS.

KC, there is so much to see in just the circle what with the Cove stones and all; however, my favourite Avebury walk, was and always will be - walking down the West Kennett Avenue, through the gate at the end into the next meadow, up Waden Hill to get the best view of Silbury and the surrounding landscape then over to West Kennett Long Barrow which is amazing (even more so now that I seen other examples of chambered long barrows). You can vary the walk back by following the route of the Winterbourne stream which flows past Silbury, the path comes out by the NT carpark.

You have to cross the A4 to get to WKLB and it is a fast road. When I first visited many years ago on a daytrip from London, I naively thought it was a country road and nearly got run over.

I hope you enjoy your visit and that the weather is kind to you.

Did a real marathon walk at the summer solstice, with a friend in tow.
The circle itself.
Polisher.
Holed stone.
Cup marked stone.
Fyfield drift and Monster stone.
Devils Den.
The Sanctuary.
Overton hill barrows.
West Kennet Avenue back to Avebury.

The blazing heat nearly killed us, that night though the Stella in the Lion actually tasted great. !

Blimey, I would have been dead after getting to the polisher, that walk always seems so long from the henge!
