Dr Alice Roberts has just given an interview in the BBC Bristol studios for the local news; they pressed her to say what she found most exciting. She was reluctant to pin it down but did mention Happisburgh in Norfolk. I'll certainly be giving it a look - thanks for the reminder Wideford.

May even stretch to some peanuts.

There was a theme though, which was that the people who worked the land were the same people of the Iron and Bronze Ages who, in spite of the romans, continued the same practices. Dr Roberts also delivered a little pep talk re metal detecting and involving a local Finds Officer before anything is unearthed.

It was ok if yer interested in R*mans I guess (which I am a bit I s'pose). VERY disappointing that we're still having trouble shaking off the 'British history starts with the R*mans' thang. Ho-hum. love Moth

Ho-hum. love Moth I think AR tried to make the link with the 'common people' who continued to work the land after (some of) the elite leaders went over to the Roman occupiers e.g. the hoard of coins which she interpreted as 'offerings' in the pagan/pre-roman sense and didn't think the people who buried it ever intended to come back to it. I personally found seeing archaeology in action quite exciting. This BBC blog with Alice Roberts may be of interest. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tv/2010/08/digging-for-britain.shtml

Oh, I love a bit o' Vindolanda, me! I love Hadrian's Wall full stop. It's the missus' fault, being a Geordie, and all that - we've had a bit of a gander at various parts of The Wall over the years, and I can't help but love it. And I've never admitted that in public before! ;) I sort of hoped the reason for the series starting with the Romans is just to raise interest in the show. Hopefully they'll jump around, timescale-wise, and not just run up too modern day as the series progresses. That'd be a wasted opportunity, imo... Whatever else, I thought it was a really nice show. Always nice to see Ms Roberts on our screens. *ahem* ;) G x

But what I'm trying to get at is that they made that link without telling anyone anything substantial about those people, which I just can't understand, except as an annoying & sad ommision...! I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, just that it was frustrating & disappointing that they didn't see fit to have a preceding prog (or progs) about the iron age, bronze age and neolithic. Apart from owt else, the link you're talking about that they made would have been sooooo much more meaningful. It's not like there's not plenty of archaeology they could have talked about - in fact it would've been a perfect chance to tell people about pre-R*man stuff that ISN'T Stonebloodyhenge!!! Lol! love Moth
