Driving from Pembroke to Brighton
Jul 30, 2010, 12:47
Heading over on the motorway (tomorrow), any recommendations for a place to stop off roughly halfways (and not too far off the motorway) that is megalithic or just a nice stop off?

Thanks in advance

Short detour south of Bristol to Stanton Drew? Time it right, and you can grab lunch in the Druid's Arms beer garden. Only beer garden to my knowledge with megaliths in it.

I think I would second that as a half way point if you're driving from Fishguard - the pub garden is the best I've ever visited as has three Cove Stones. If you are picking up the M4 up to Reading it is only a short detour to Avebury (Junct 15 or 16) but you won't want to leave.

Wishing you a safe journey, enjoy Brighton (it buzzy and busy).

Trouble is, Stanton Drew from the M4 is not that short a detour in time. Realistically it could be up to an hour each way depending on time of day. Bristol is a right pain to circumnavigate at times and Stanton Drew is almost exactly opposite the M4 on the other side of Bristol.

You might be better off going to Tinkinswood and St Lythans which are both less than 5 miles from an M4 junction along a country road. Not to mention utterly delicious.

I've driven it a lot, and you're looking at about 20/25 mins to reach Stanton Drew from the M4 unless you hit Bristol during rush hour.

At the risk of subverting a thread with driving tips, which way do you go? We always end up taking a long time from the m4...

I drop down the M32, come off at the junction after Tesco, then onto St Phillip's Causeway. Then onto the A4174 briefly, cutting off onto the B3119. Then follow the A37 to the Stanton Drew turn-off. Avoids the centre of Bristol completely.

Bizarrely in ireland, especially in the country, women will actually call other women "lads". Tis odd.

A example would be, one girl to a groups of girls "So lads, whats the craic?"

Never understood why myself.
