Several stones to hunt out there (and a bit closer than Alphamstone, which is admittedly more spectacular than the puddingstones) - details of the Puddingstone Trail can be found on the Meg Portal. Thorgrim gives a lovely detailed account on MP, we have found a couple of puddingstones at cross lanes but mostly its used in churches .. Another place of interest is Great Canfield church, with Odin carved on one pillar with his two ravens, and the Great World Serpent on the other pillar. Its weird that a Northern pagan god confronts you in the porch of a christian church, often wondered if our folklore giants don't stem from the Northern giant Ymir....

Well remembered oci :-) Moss writes about Great Canfield church on her blog by the way - http://northstoke.blogspot.com/2009/05/great-canfield-church.html and as both Avebury and Essex have been mentioned here, this bit especially may be of interest - "Right hand pillar of the tymphaneum with Odin and serpents? It has the 'dot' all down the serpent back, as seen on the Avebury font serpents. The tails are fanned out similar to a fish tail. 'The legend goes that the world serpent with his tail in his mouth was doomed to lie in the ocean encircling the world till the Ragnarok. Should the tail ever be pulled out of the jaws, universal calamity would follow.' Brian Branston - The Lost Gods of England."

The Viper is one of Essex's many little gems pub-wise. It's set all alone in woodland but serves real ale, excellent food and a little beer festival over the August Bank holiday (Jake the Snake is the pub's resident tipple but there are other goodies on tap during the festival). Ingatestone is only about fifteen minute's drive from The Viper so something to see stone-wise on the way there or on the way back. A woodland pub called the Viper serving real ale named Jake the Snake does sound very inviting. At the risk of making myself even more unpopular, may I just add the caveat ... please car-share where ever possible and someone draw the short straw to drive and not drink. Sorry to be a killjoy but have seen first hand the devastation that drink driving can cause.

The police judged the speed of the driver who killed my 14 yr old nephew at 117mph so i see it as a sensible comment, well as sensible as the electronic road side signs that state "think, don't drink and drive". Now i'd personally never drink and drive but i still read the signs. Maybe i should ask for them to be switched off everytime i'm passing them as i don't need their warning. : ) As for car sharing, well that's always sensible if possible, isn't it. ?

Please keep on topic. Advice on drink driving, though perhaps made with good intent, is both off-topic and a little patronising. We're all adults here and, as long as we stay within the law, should be allowed to enjoy a drink (and drive) within the legal limits. I'll lock this thread for a while so people can reflect on what they really want to say here, and what they really want to be part of (as far as TMA is concerned). Thanks. LS

You are preaching to the converted...but drinking and driving and driving at excessive speeds don't go hand in hand...they are two seperate issues(not exclusively I admit). I consider myself a responsible adult...and as such I don't need telling how to run my life by anyone especially when I stick strictly within all legal parameters. For the record I don't drink and drive..I wouldn't even take a half a shandy when driving...I avoid driving at excessive speeds too....but someone who by their own admission does not drive(in fact since I've been on these boards ...I can count 10 seperate times when they have proudly boasted of the fact that they don't have a car)starts putting partronising twaddle on a thread...knowing fine well it has nothing to do with the topic..it smacks of trying to disrupt said thread(actually the fact I am replying shows it has worked so sit back and feel proud of yourself)...something the moderators have warned against time and time again...so I hope they have taken note about who kicked this off!!!! I am unsure what motives are behind this thread disruption...apart from soliciting responses like this and misquoting them to play at some kind of martyr. As for car-sharing...yes it's a great idea...again why do we need telling about it...it's not exactly a brand new revolutionary idea..and something most of us who do have cars participate in anyway!

Thanks for unlocking it for a moment Mr L. As Chairman (and who bloody needs it?) of HA I’d just like to say I’m utterly sick and tired of obvious downers being concocted whenever HA megameets or minimeets are mentioned here, it's like Pavlov's dogs. Didn’t know it was open to all indeed! And unbelievably patronising advice to mature people to car share and not to drink drive (from a non-car owning non-attendee!) This is EXACTLY what happened this time last year. It’s not sodding rocket science – if you don’t like HA or it’s members and you have no intention of coming to a meet then kindly refrain from putting your oar into threads about it. We shall all get on just fine that way. Thanks.

**Bump** I have to say that as circumstances are currently plotting against me, I may not make the Avebury Megameet this year. There's a better chance that I'll make this one though...

Ach, that's a pity you won't be able to make it to Avebury oci, but good that we might see you at the Viper : -) I called them yesterday actually - their Beer Festival is definitely on for the three days (28, 29 and 30) over the August Bank Holiday. The landlord says there'll be about 60 different real ales, lagers and ciders available over the period! If anyone's coming via Ingatestone (one stone on the south side of the church, a mass of pudding stone in the wall of the north side, and two other stones at the entrance of Fryerning Lane) take Fryerning Lane from the High Street and then take a right at the T-junction into Mill Green Road. From there it's about a 10-15 minute drive. There are a few parking spots in front of the Viper, at the side and across the road under the trees. Moss and I will be there from about noon onwards on Sunday, 29th so hope to see you and whoever else can make it (as well as meeting up with other folks in Avebury for the Big Megameet there on the 21 August :-)
