The Essex mini Megameet
Jul 12, 2010, 21:03
Though like nothing on the scale of Heritage Action's wonderful World Megameets in Avebury (this year to be held on Saturday, 21 August - see http://themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=57344 ) there'll be a bit of a mini Megameet on Sunday, 29 August at the Viper Pub, Mill Green, Essex (more here - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/37/3750/Viper/Mill_Green ).

The Viper is one of Essex's many little gems pub-wise. It's set all alone in woodland but serves real ale, excellent food and a little beer festival over the August Bank holiday (Jake the Snake is the pub's resident tipple but there are other goodies on tap during the festival). Ingatestone is only about fifteen minutes' drive from The Viper so something to see stone-wise on the way there or on the way back.

For those who can't make it to the Avebury Megameet maybe we'll catch up with you at The Viper instead (or as well : -)

I don't see where there is exclusivity to any groups or individuals mentioned, so why bar yourself?

.... which says (as we have said many many times every year): "All are welcome".

Not at all Mr m. The Avebury World Megameet (though organised by Heritage Action) makes it clear (above link) that, "All are welcome" so hope to see you there :-)

The Essex Minimeet is for those who might not be able to make it to Avebury. Not a great deal to see here I'm afraid, though Ingatestone, Alphamstone and Broomfield are worth a visit. In fact, I'd suggest that anyone who can make it for the day do Alphamstone first, working their way back via The Viper then Ingatestone.

Though falling outside the TMA remit there are some fantastic old churches in the area (one with a strong pagan influence).

Don't forget the Puddingstone Trail, which runs from the NorthEast across to West of Ingatestone.

Several stones to hunt out there (and a bit closer than Alphamstone, which is admittedly more spectacular than the puddingstones) - details of the Puddingstone Trail can be found on the Meg Portal.

There is'nt really an agenda as such, its down to whether it rains or not, picnic or pub. People go off to visit the the stones, its very informal.
This is the relevant thread...
