Aberdeenshire and Donald Trump
Jan 05, 2010, 00:47
OK!

I don't really watch TV and pay very little attention to the news, so whilst searching for the best places to visit in the megalithic-soaked area in Scotland that I plan to visit in Feb, I discovered that Mr Trump is building a huge golf course along the coast near Aberdeen. Now, I have some concerns for the sites in the area, but before I go and tie myself to the Aquhorthies, I was wondering if anyone knew what was ACTUALLY happening and if any sites will be moved or damaged.

I mean, who the hell plays golf in Scotland anyway? Doesnt it rain and snow too much?

Scotland is the home of golf.... thats why he wants to build a course that will outclass St Andrews.

Trump is building a golf course near Balmedie, north of Aberdeen on top of ancient sand dunes and a reserve. St Andrew's is famous for several golf courses but this is going to be a tragedy. The road system won't cope, Aberdeen airport is 12 miles away, no railhead and the proposed ring road for Aberdeen won't be coming this far. Many locals have protested against, Martin Ford, former head of council, was sacked, basically Trump has bought up the opposition except for one farmer. He even found some long lost relatives on the Isle of Lewis to make himself look more pro-Scottish. I've always protested against this muppet and I'm ashamed to say that the SNP including Salmond have basically given it the go ahead. In the end the hotel, houses and golf course will only be used by the mega rich, there is practically no chance of locals playing this course, I play as well but being a teuchter fae Turra (20 miles away) no chance for me. Funnily enough there is a better golf course being designed just north of Stonehaven by Jack Nicklaus, the world's best ever golfer. Good guy checked the area, consulted the locals and is using a ruined hotel for the clubhouse. The dunes on Balmedie sands are forever changing and it's scary to think what might be damaged underneath once the machinery gets to work.

The best example of this is to the north on the Ythan Estuary at Forvie. Now a protected area and bird reserve. It also has the remains of a very old village and church. For the people on this site several kerb cairns and a ring cairn have appeared, and going by last summer's aerial pics more might be coming thru. The whole area is simply stunning for it's beauty and there are several good walks (the kerb cairns are difficult to find, as no path leads to them, but they are all reasonably close to each other). You'll also find some pics that I took of Forvie, look in the Aberdeenshire section. If you need help just leave a message here and I'll do my best to assist.

He went ahead and stabilised the dunes by planting marram grass, even though he still hadn't finished getting permission or consulting with locals and the RSPB, I read, Drewboy.

I imagine someone in the SNP party up there has a brother in law or something who will be ideally placed when they decide they need to improve the infrastructure to cope with increased traffic, thats what we'd expect down here in Edinburgh. If its anything like here too, it will all run horrendously over budget using taxpayers money. I'm all for scottish nationalism, but not when its just window dressing for a gravy train for the high and mighty. My idea of nationalism would have been insisting the new parliament be designed by a Scot, for instance.

I saw something about the Jack Nicklaus site, he's going to be saving a marvelous building in that old hotel, when it would be cheaper to build from scratch, huh?

I left the SNP over this controversy as did many others. They say it would bring work to the area but most of what I've read suggest that all the important stuff would be done by Americans qualified in the various fields. As for the maram grass, that simply goes against nature the dunes forever change and forever change they should. Anyway how many golf courses do we need up here Newmachar, Oldmeldrum (Grenago Stone is here), Royal Aberdeen needs modernised, Stonehaven. Remember we have three of the so-called best links courses at Nairn Dunbar, Royal Dornoch and Cruden Bay. He could have spent money modernising them but no he has to destroy a place of natural and historic interest. Even a planned wind farm in the North Sea has been shelved thanks to this guy. Trump, no thanks!

But loads of respect to you!

(p.s. Kintore Golf Club has a burial cairn on it's course which they look after.)

Is that where they bury golfers who've staggered up the 2nd hole?

I've no time for the comb-over king, but opinion seems split between locals over the destruction of dunes versus income for the area which is not oil-related. Frankly our Tourist board needs to get its stuff together and promote Aberdeenshire as the finest part of Scotland, which it is. We don't need another Americanised course to draw people in, just promote what we have. (Yah-boo to people from other parts of Scotland ;-)

SNP seems determined to repopulate Scotland with americans... american view of Scotland-as-wished-for isnt the same as the real Scotland, but thats okay, they can just change it... bigger, better, faster, more. IT'sokay when turning a humble british apple pie into caramel apple betty, but can't Trump and the likes see that it's wrong to do it with a whole culture? It's nice they genuinely believe they have the best culture and we all must want the same thing, but MacDonaldising the world is just homogenizing the variety out of the planet. I've heard he's hired people to write on blogs saying how they are the majority and want his golf course too now... ::mutters darkly:::

I thought SNP were over themselves with the whole white race thing too, but their homecoming scotland adverts didn't have a single non white face in them, and visit scotland/white is where you look up coming here (for the snowy pictures they say).

My (snp)tour guide boss this time last year said I had to wear the kilt driving the bus as what could be more scottish than a highlander in the kilt. I said a lowlander refusing to wear one, maybe?

Made me laugh out loud as well - Clydebank born and bred - when I was a lad the only kids wearing kilts were called "targets" :-)
