Lazy miners duped duke
Jun 12, 2000, 20:42
According to this week's Marlborough-Pewsey Gazette and Herald, the shaft dug by Duke of Northumberland's men was not filled in properly and this is what caused the new hole. A year after they dug the hole, they were employed to fill it all in properly and paid for it. But they saved themselves time by plugging it with timbers near the top then filled the rest with soil. It sounds as though the hole has been really dangerous for years. Lucky in a way that all the new rain has brought it to light. Anyone could have killed themselves if they had been in the wrong place at the right time.
