stonehenge exhibition, talk and book signing
Sep 03, 2004, 09:29
Hi all,
A bit of info about ongoing stuff to do with 'Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion':

Exhibition
'Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion'

Following a fire at the Vertigo Arts Centre in Leytonstone (no one was hurt, but most of the first floor was destroyed), the exhibition 'Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion', which had been on show since June, has found a new home at the Cowley Club, a co-operative cafe/bar and radical bookshop at 12 London Road, Brighton. The exhibition opened on 1 September 2004 and will hopefully run until October. Call 01273 696104 for further details.
The exhibition features classic photos of the Stonehenge Free Festivals by Alan Lodge (Tash), photos of the exclusion zone and VE Day 1995 by Adrian Arbib, and many other photos and posters from the last 30 years.
Samples of Tash's unrivalled archive of photos of free festivals, travellers, free parties and political protest, ranging from the last 1970s to the present day, as well as numerous related articles, can be found on his website: www.tash.gn.apc.org
Adrian Arbib's website, containing photos documenting the struggles of marginalized peoples around the world, as well as many of the major political protests and alternative gatherings in thre UK from the 1980s to the present day, is: www.arbib.org

Talk
'Stonehenge and the counter-culture'

To coincide with the exhibition, I'll be talking about the history of the solstice gatherings at Stonehenge from the 19th century to the present day (including the free festivals, the Beanfield, travellers, Druids, the road protest movement and the current access arrangements) at the Cowley Club on Thursday 9 September at 6pm. The talk will be based on my book Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion, which was published by Alternative Albion in June.

Book signing
'Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion'

To coincide with Arthur Pendragon's open ritual for the autumn equinox at Avebury, I'll be signing copies of Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion at the National Trust shop in Avebury on Saturday 25 September from 11am to 2pm. Call 01672 539384 for further details.

'This is a fine book in every way, well written, carefully researched and with a remarkable story to tell. It is about the great change in outlook that by-passed conventional politics and directed minds towards idealism and personal transcendence. This phenomenon has rarely been approached by sociologists: their training has not equipped them for it. Worthington's book fills the gap and provides a unique record.'
John Michell, Fortean Times 188, October 2004

All the best,
Andy
