Ah, the 1944 John (Hans) Brahm directed version! There were also versions in 1932 (with Novello reprising), 1953 ... erm, and apparently 2009. I do love John Brahms' works ... even his Twilight Zone and Outer Limits episodes are stand outs. Maybe not so much his Man and Girl from U.N.C.L.E. stuff though.

Aye, in many ways, it was ever thus in terms of remakes. To paraphrase Norma Desmond, the stories were still big, it was the studios that got small.
