I went a couple of times, travelled up from Hampshire, probably when it was at Eastcote 'cos a lad we knew had moved to Northwood
It may well have been at the cutting edge of metal when NWOBHM began but when we went we found it pretty dire, too much american AOR and Quo for us, the rock night at Tiffanys in Bournemouth was a much better bet.
The fabled Newcastle Mayfair rocknights were not as wonderful as they are now being painted as, much as I love metal its fans are sometimes its own worst enemy, conservative would be a polite way of putting it, I will tip my hat to the geordies being a great audience however, if you were a live band at the Mayfair and you deserved it the crowd would give you 110% back
in an effort not to tar all rockclubs with the same brush in the 80s Bradford Rios & Nottingham Rock City were the places to hear new metal, I once spent an evening in a pub in Brum City Centre that had a jukebox that was almost entirely thrash metal, grindcore & reggae and whose clientele seemed to be 95% office workers completely oblivious to the great music
