There's some great theorising in this thread. If only Kiss put 1% of that thought into their music they might make something decent.
I assume that I'm one of the people here that would be expected to buy a Marc Bolan doll if there was one. Yeah...I probably would if it was a good likeness. And it was inflatable.
But I'm not sure why I would be expected to think that was different, other than the man himself isn't alive to sanction it. I haven't really got a problem with merchandise, although I can't help thinking Kiss milk it too much. But a Kiss coffin...that's so OTT it's brilliant! And I've said all along I haven't got a problem with Iggy earning some dosh via his ads.
My issue with Kiss is the music, which is subjective obviously. I didn't like them when I was 14-15 when some of my mates started getting into them and I have heard nothing since to alter the view. I might like the likes of Drake and Curtis that are referred to in Ian's post, but I don't just sit at home and listen to maudlin music by dead people all day (well not every day anyway!). I love the first NYD's LP and lots of naff dance records that would never be described as 'real' (how I hate that term!) And anyway,I've been listening to Hotpants Romance this last week for god's sake!
I've also got to take issue with Julian's quote - "if the Dolls had come up with 'Destroyer', we'd all know about it".
That's one of those quotes that sound great but ultimately mean nothing. If the Dolls had come up with Destroyer rather than their self titled debut they wouldn't be held in such high regard. They've earned that reputation in other words. IMO of course...
I'm glad Kiss make other people happy, but they do absolutely nothing for me.
