Warning, contrary opinion!

This album is not my cup of tea -- I like Roky when he's "crazy", not being a mellow gospelish guy. And Okervil is just some boring alt-country band as far as I can tell. Too slick. College rock.

Well, 1st I saw them live w/ Roky here in L.A. before I heard the record, and while O River probably isn't anyone I'm likely to follow up with, their lead guitarist is notably wonderful. (More notably in person, though she's fine on the record)

2nd, tho it is in some ways a needless biographical recap, the record is odd enough to work for me. I don't think anyone's been born that knows what to do with Roky in the studio, what kind of record (if any in particular) he'd really like to make or how to go about making it. So given all of that, I didn't mind this one. And "John Lawman" stomps the terra.

Have only listened all the way through once, will listen again when I have a few minutes and some distance. It was nice to have Roky's energy in the room on recordings I'm not super-familiar with. And it wasn't any kind of hacked-together bullshit job. So I can't complain.
