I saw them play 2 nights in London last year, the first supporting Jesus Lizard and Harvey Milk; then their own gig at Corsica studios. They were brilliant both nights - Corsica studios was more intimate of course but the sound quality of the Forum gig was stunning. I chatted to Emil Amos after the Corsica gig and he said that it was Sonic Youth's sound guy touring with Jesus Lizard who'd given them a new set up that Emil was obviously impressed with. He was asking my thoughts - shame I've no idea when it comes to technical matters, but I could tell him it sounded good!
The line-up was great as well with two drummers, enabling Emil to add a 3rd guitar to some tracks, and Randall Dunn (produced recent SunnO))), Grails and Six Organs records etc) on electronics.
As for post-BTP records, I think they're great though I am biased as Grails are one of my favourite bands. Easy listening?! The atmosphere of the later records are probably less dense than BTP, though that said the Randall Dunn produced Doomsdayer's Holiday starts pretty ominously with screams and Sabbath riffing.
They're recording the next volume of BTP this Spring though so perhaps some of that will be played live.
