Music for 18 musicians - Steve Reich
Oct 19, 2006, 08:07
any fans of this out there? I just bought it and few other records on a recent visit to Cologne. Playing the first side it is pretty inspiring repetitive stuff with asteady pulse being played out by a selection instruments as the theme develops/changes. Reckon a few people here would like this.

sure thing, but have you checked out terry riley's "in C"? it's like that, but way way warmer (ie better, for me at least) /// go for the original 60s version on cbs if you wanna hear it in it's full glory - there are so many takes, and i'#ve not heard one that stunk, but THIS is the one = http://www.amazon.com/Terry-Riley-C-Darlene-Reynard/dp/B0000024Q8/ref=pd_sim_m_3/102-1022410-5651301?ie=UTF8

I was playing 'In C' last night - marvellous stuff indeed- he's a genius (as you know!)

I used to have that double vinyl 'Persian Surgery Dervishes' which I must get on CD - literally mind-blowing stuff!

There's loads of stuff by Riley I've missed out on after the mid 70s

Yes, but Terry Riley's 'In C' is better, and is what this was based on. Infact, that one Riley piece has inspired nearly everythng that has been made ever since - he's a genius.
I really like Reich's 'handclapping' and 'Drumming', which seem rythmically really complex yet somehow very accessible.

thanks for the tip. What I enjoyed about 18 is the way it varies over time does C stay in the same place or does it wander?

Yes Riley's Persian Surgery is excellent, I think I slightly prefer Shri Camel though. His two best anyway.

doesn't wander /... it really MOVES, oh yeah! it has one continual pulse, around which a series of motifs curl + develop + overlap in the most psychedelic manner ... can't believe you'd not like it if you dig reich

Thanks for the heads up on 'Shri Camel' - I've only heard a bit of that many years ago but never got around to fully investigate it.

I love it, but still think 'drumming' is so much better. Shame some of the recent stuff, whatsitcalled 'city life'/'proverbs' is utter kak.
