Moonie, I'm not sure exactly what years you are alluding to. But i suspect the one's your talking about are the Thatcher years?
Aside from that, the rot had set in long before that. I can at least speak with some authority about Cars and Motorcycles as an avid enthusiast.
As far as Britain is concerned, it was pretty much COMPLETELY over for your Motorcycle industry by 1969. Triumph and Norton limped on for a few more years. But they were already dead. They just didn't know it yet.
Same for many other marks too....i remember them well too. Austin Healey,Jaguar {when it was still actually British}, Triumph Autos, The TR6's 7's.....The last one's in the 70's here were not made to last., M.G...Mini Cooper..etc etc.....Britain lost that whole sector of industry before Thatcher.
And so many other associated companies too. Skinner Union, Solex,Amal, Hepolite,Lucas, Lucas Rita, Smiths{speedos/tachos},etc.........
Your Motorcycle industry collapsed coincident with mass exportation at the beginning of the 1960's of tens of thousands of cheaply made Japanese motorbikes.
Then it became Hundreds of thousands.
Ponder this. Almost every one of those cheap Asian bikes ended up in the scrap heap. There are still many thousands of bikes proudly made in Britain that are lovingly tended to and collected all over the world. Why?
Cuz they were built to last. And they are Classics. I know, i own a 1971 Triumph Bonneville. I would not trade it for any motorbike ever made in Japan.
And what about your Bicycles too? Do you remember REAL Raleigh Bicycles? Proudly made in Nottingham? I do. Also GONE. Chinese is better eh?
I could offer this same discussion about all the American companies that went under the same way.
I've seen it happen this way since the 70's. If you do not protect your own markets, Your Fucked.

The decline in British made cars and bikes in the UK wasn't just simply down to people choosing to buy foreign, cheaper models. It was also quite a lot to do with the then Tory government deciding to pretty much dismantle and destroy manufacturing industry as it was often seen as being more trouble than it was 'worth'. The same flag-wavers that would bang on about "Great" Britain saw fit to essentially render its industries inert.

As stated by dodge one the decline of British Industry started long before Thatcher. She just put it out of its misery in a foul and terrible way. It started early, but was accelerated during the big Buy British campaign during the 70s. This worked too well. Everyone bought British stuff and realised how poor a lot of it really was!

It was just good business - cheaper manufacture, better advertising, better reliability, better features - on the part of the foreign manufacturers that drove Britain out of that race. The exotic became the everyday and the old everyday became exotic.

A note on the British car industry. There was a time around 15 years ago when you could buy an MG-F (made in England) from Japan ,ship it all the way back to England and pay all the proper duty and it would still be cheaper than buying from your local dealer! Probably still can do similar.

It still goes on. The base cost of a British manufactured car in Ireland is cheaper than it is in the UK. This is because the Irish gov't load a huge tax on new cars and the lower base cost keeps the total price 'sensible' (still a higher total cost than the in UK). If the base price can be that low here, why isn't it that low in the UK? Some would say greed or rip-off others would say it's what the market can bear .

Well yes, I was being overly simplistic (given it was quite late and I was'nt really focused). But it is true to say that the Thatcher Government waved the "Buy British" flag whilst hammering the nails in the coffins of certain industries, a legacy that continues to this day. The banks get bailed out 'cos they were allowed to get into a position of dominance to the extent that any Government, Tory, Labour, is practically in their thrall and in the meantime industry is allowed to wither and die.
