Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller, head of the Army office that buys soldier gear wrote: Battlefield surveys show that nearly 90 percent of soldiers are satisfied with their M4s... Fuller said he's received no official reports of flawed weapons performance at Wanat. "Until it showed up in the news, I was surprised to hear about all this," he said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091012/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_afghanistan_weapons_failures_9 the general had probably just left his rotary meeting and was headed to "the club" for lunch and a round of golf... and as much as i hate to agree with john bolton about anything... i share his concern about the weekend attack on the military base in pakistan due to pakistan's current ownership of nukes ... yeah afghanistan is messed up an' iran is doing every thing it can to get there, but pakistan is already there... probably much to the dismy of india i'm quite sure, and somewhat troublesome to our kommirad's in conflict in grozny... good thing that there are no "loopholes" in pakistan nuke security... good thing that indeed... i've never really doubted the actual intelligence purporting the head of pakistan isi as the real mastermind of 9/11, as well as various and sundry nefarious activities such as the mumbai hotel attack... x x x

Err, Ron... I don't know what it's like on your side of the pond, but over here "paki" is a racially abusive term.

More than 30 years ago I was one of many thousands attending Rock Against Racism marches. Even before then it was an offensive term.

When I lived in London in 1982/3, I remember local black and white folks used to refer to the local asian-owned newsagents as "the paki shop" (e.g. "you'll get that music paper at the paki shop"). I also remember how they didn't seem to 'blink an eye' when they said that phrase, although I noticed there were never any asian folk around when they did use that term. So just for you, here's a bit of audio on the subject about 5mins long...... http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8300000/8300462.stm

Got to be said, alot of language use is about your own idea of decorum and sense of self. Context etc aside, there are loads of words I generally don't use coz they come across as plain 'moronic'. For that reason (in the main) I always refer to a Chinese as opposed to a Chinky, etc. It's really easy, makes you more sophisticated for one;-) Just like the Golliwog debate of a few months back. However innocently it can be used, I'd feel like a prize tool if I ever used it the way Carol Thatcher did. Does not automatically demonise her, but you still think, FFS woman, you're meant to have a bit of intelligence about yourself. x

Judging by that audio clip, it would also appear to decide upon who you are and in what 'context' a person uses the word, whether it's deemed 'offensive' or not- that said, ol' john Humphrys was throwing the word around like a kid with an open tin of paint!

loved the kid with a tin of paint analogy. there's no debate in my house. the term's derogative and therefore banned, not that my kids would use a term like that cos they aren't even remotely rascist. i hear shit like that at work all fucking day and it pisses me off royally. half the fucking idiots that are so casually rascist look like skinheads cos that's the way of mens haircuts when they get thinner on top. but i wonder to myself if they actually were. tried to get through to them and left myself in line for ribbings and banter which doesn't bother me one bit but jesus it's like being back in the playgrounds of Comprehensive school in 1976. they all roar laughing when one of them shouts out a crappy rascist text joke his fucking fascist mate sent him the other day when he was pissed in the pub in his england shirt with the curry stains down the front from the vindaloo he choked down the previous week he was stood in the pub pissed up and decided to go and have an indian... need the money guys or i'd bury my fucking sorry head under the pillows and wait for all the cunts with superiority complexes to fucking die or get a life education. zero tolerance as soon as i step through my front door. asked people to leave in the past as regards their fucking foul arrogance.
