'I don't think we're looking at a normal house. I think we're looking at something equivalent to a priest's quarters.'

It will be interesting to see if it predates Avebury and if it did what would be the odds of Marden's stones ending up at Avebury? That would set the cat amongst the pigeons wouldn't it! Just a thought but an interesting one nevertheless!

Well only priests washed themselves and cared for their homes in those days i expect, i guess the rest of the neolithic people were right tramps, well how could they not be, bothering stones all day, defleshing their relatives, hunting large game, no time for cleanliness. Busy busy. ; ) plus, what archaeo worth his salt would find a "normal" house. Pftttttttt. !

cool! I dunno if you saw my comment on the News page on 16th July: I wrote: Ooh! Apparently, "Looks like we may have a Durrington Walls style Neolithic building surface at Marden Henge. Need to confirm that but looks promising" Whatever they've found - it's all good, innit? :) G x

According to all the reports I've read, yes! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1290843/Archaeologists-begin-dig-buried-stone-circle-TEN-times-bigger-Stonehenge.html It was last looked at 41 years ago apparently. The findings should shed a bit more light on things. One thing is obvious...this part of Wiltshire was a massive centre for whatever was going on when you combine it with Avebury, Stonehenge, and Durrington. More reason to wonder why we still know so little about something so wonderous and important to the people of its time!

Sounder wrote: I don't recall there ever being mention of any stones at Marden but could be wrong - can't even check my books as they're packed in preparation for moving bah!! As I said before, I don't know much about the site but this suggests there were stones. Jim Leary sort of indicates there was when comparing the place to Avebury etc. http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk/news/headlines/8225512.Mystery_near_Marden_of_henge/
