Hi there, as an essex resident (albeit a northern ex-pat one), Ive been intrigued by the info on here regarding the Puddingstone Trail and the place names with the word "stone" in the title. Not far from me on the Dengie Peninsular (South side of the Blackwater)is a little community just called Stone, it has a pub called "The Stone" - it's got me wondering if there is or was some sort of stone in the vicinity, hence the name. Has anyone investigated or should I be the first ? I normally spend my time grubbing around for old stuff washed up on the beaches of the Crouch and Blackwater estuaries (fantastic fosil sharks teeth last weekend from the Crouch by the way, plus some very old pottery and what appears to me to be a flint core possibly washed up from the depths of the north sea)but this site has opened up my interest in other areas. Thanks by the way to Moss for mentioning the Petrified Oak Forest of Mundon on another thread - just up the road from me, lived here for 11 years and never knew it existed ! Would have fancied popping over to the meet but unfortunately clashes with my boys 4th birthday party (and another beer festival). Maybe next time. cheers.

Hi and welcome, Not sure about the Stone pub having a stone - stones being fairly rare round Essex, so you should be the first to investigate it. I love the Dengie marsh and the old Saxon church looking over the estuary, St.Cedd who founded it of course also came down from Lindisfarne, and it was built from the roman fort there. The petrified trees of Mundon was a find, I've written about it somewhere (they appeared in the Domesday book) so are probably very much older. but there is'nt much information out there The question is why are they still standing, did they turn to stone ?;). The church is also interesting, though you can't go in its too dangerous, a lost DMV me thinks. As for the Puddingstone Trail, someone had the theory that the puddlestones marked a trackway right back to the West, there is more info on the Megalithic Portal about it, but puddlestones do seem to appear in a lot of churches round here at the base of the building.....

Yes, its a cool little part of the country, one of the oldest churches (st peters-on-the wall), one of first roman forts next door to it (othona), and just a little bit along there is the site of the battle of Maldon, and now i can list the petrified forest as well. I had a closer look at the area around Stone mapwise, strangely enough there is a very long funny little road leading to nowhere in particularly running parallel with Stone Road. Its name ? Stangate Road ! I took a walk via google street view and found something interesting that could be something or nothing, bike expedition planned for the weekend. I appear to have the bug!

*BUMP* There'll be a Heritage Action poster like the one shown here should anyone have difficulty finding us. Hope to see you there :-) Littlestone wrote: Though like nothing on the scale of Heritage Action's wonderful World Megameets in Avebury (this year to be held on Saturday, 21 August - see http://themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=57344 ) there'll be a bit of a mini Megameet on Sunday, 29 August at the Viper Pub, Mill Green, Essex (more here - http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/37/3750/Viper/Mill_Green ).
The Viper is one of Essex's many little gems pub-wise. It's set all alone in woodland but serves real ale, excellent food and a little beer festival over the August Bank holiday (Jake the Snake is the pub's resident tipple but there are other goodies on tap during the festival). Ingatestone is only about fifteen minute's drive from The Viper so something to see stone-wise on the way there or on the way back. For those who can't make it to the Avebury Megameet maybe we'll catch up with you at The Viper instead (or as well : -)

Ach! Excellent little Minimeet, though the heavens opened up after you left oci, so we took refuge in the big marquee 'til it stopped. Gotta do that again - next Beer Fes is Easter (though this one continues all day tomorrow as well : -)

If anyone’s in the area and feels like joining us that’d be great (from about noon onwards). Ingatestone is close by so something stony to see).

Ach! Now, if you'd said Monday, we might have been in the area as we have to be in Tiptree later that day.

Well, we’re flexible oci, so Monday it is, at the same time (gives other peeps a bit more time to get there as well). No prob if you can’t make it either – we’ll lift a pint of Jake the Snake to you and Mrs oci in your absence :-)

[quote="Resonox"]........I consider myself a responsible adult...and as such I don't need telling how to run my life by anyone especially when I stick strictly within all legal parameters........but someone who by their own admission does not drive(in fact since I've been on these boards ...I can count 10 seperate times when they have proudly boasted of the fact that they don't have a car)starts putting partronising twaddle on a thread...knowing fine well it has nothing to do with the topic..it smacks of trying to disrupt said thread.....something the moderators have warned against time and time again...so I hope they have taken note about who kicked this off!!!! I am unsure what motives are behind this thread disruption...apart from soliciting responses like this and misquoting them to play at some kind of martyr.quote] Personally, I can't see any reason for you to "kick off" about someone making a plea for not drink driving. No accusations against anyone were made, so I find your reaction a bit extreme. The fact that the person making the plea doesn't drive is irrelevant. You don't need to be able to drive to have an anti-drink driving opinion. Also, to think that a plea against drink driving at a pub-meet to be a "thread disruption" beggars belief. Regards, TE.

Some people just can't help being twats, let's forgive him. I'd love to forgive him in person. ; )
